The Angel of Friendship

There were two students of Tam and Chacham who did everything together. The time came that the students had to go their own ways. For more than a year, they had been separated from their beloved teachers, Tam and Chacham, and from each other. One student traveled to Yerushalayim Ir haKodesh – the Holy City of Jerusalem, and had just returned on a specific day. The other student returned on the very same day from more than a year spent in study at a well-known yeshiva.

As each student entered the House of Study, they greeted Tam and Chacham with the traditional blessing recited when seeing a great scholar of Torah: “Blessed art thou, Oh Lord Our God, King of the Universe, Who has given of His wisdom to those who fear Him.” But when the two friends laid eyes on each other after such a long time, they each instinctively cried out the traditional blessing recited when seeing a friend again after more than a year has passed: “Blessed art thou Oh Lord our God, King of the Universe, who raises the dead.”

Tam, Chacham and their students all rejoiced at this fortunate and coincidental reunion. Then one of the younger students asked: “Why is it that when we see a friend we have not seen for a year, we are commanded to bless G-d for reviving the dead? Surely this is a strange commandment, since no one has died.”

Chacham explained: “We learn in the Zohar haKodesh that everyone has a light burning for them in the world above, and everyone’s light is unique. When two friends meet, their lights above are united, and out of that union of two lights an angel is born. That angel has the strength to survive for only one year, unless its life is renewed when the friends meet again. If they are separated for more than a year, the angel begins to weaken and eventually wastes away. That is why we bless the dead upon meeting a friend we have not seen for more than a year, to revive the angel.”

Just as the Chacham finished speaking they heard a sound like the rustling of wings, and a sudden wind swirled around the room, brushing against them, and they knew that the angel had been reborn.

The Confused Student

Tam and Chacham taught many students and listened to all who came to them for guidance. One student left his studies to help his struggling family.

Some time passed and no one heard from the student. In time he was forgotten. One day the student came to visit his old teachers Tam and Chacham.

He explained how hard it was to leave his studies, but he found a well paying job in a field that involved mixing freely with men and women in a relaxed atmosphere. He went on to say, “You would be proud of me, I think of your lessons all through my working hours, and never once had any inappropriate thoughts.”

Chacham thought for a moment and said, “From a woman did sin originate, and because of her we must all die. (ben Sira 25:24) By preventing yourself from getting involved with the people at your job, you may actually live longer.”

The student added, “I don’t talk to the women nor notice what they wear. The men ask me all the time to eat with them, but their food and what they talk about is not kosher.” The student noticed that Tam shook his head.

Chacham responded,” we learn that ’whoever engages in too much conversation with women, brings evil on himself, neglects the study of Torah and in the end will inherit gehennom’ (Pirke Avos 1:5). I’d say you learned your lessons well.”

Religious Beliefs in Society

Tam quietly asked the student for his name. The student was taken aback. His rabbi and teacher certainly must remember his name. Tam waited a moment and then said, “You have listened, but not learned ’The Holy One, Blessed be He created all things in accordance with His wisdom and whatever He created cannot possibly be shameful or ugly’ (Iggeres haKodesh 13th cent.) Please give me your mother’s name so I can make a proper Mi Shebeirach (a prayer for healing) for you.’ “

The student was confused. He felt well and he thought to himself why would his teacher want to make a Mi Shebeirach for him?

Tam saw the confusion in the face of his student and answered, “I am an old man. Yet, I can hardly walk down the street from my house without fighting off some unwanted thought. You claim that as a young man in the prime of life, you entertain no unholy thoughts. Surely there must be something wrong with you! I will make a Mi Shebeirach for you to have a refuah sheleima (complete recovery)!”

The Muddy Path to Paradise

Tam and Chacham had a custom of visiting various communities, where they would stay in the homes of wealthy members of the community while they collected charity for those less fortunate.

In one of the cities that Tam and Chacham would visit, there lived a wealthy merchant. The merchant owned a large mansion with many rooms, whenever he heard of the Tam and Chacham’s arrival in his city, he made sure that his mansion was locked. Well aware of the tendency of Tam and Chacham to stay at the homes of the wealthy, where there was ample room to welcome the many people who wanted to speak to Tam and Chacham about many different things. The merchant would quickly leave his mansion, many times claiming that he has to go to a last-minute business meeting. He preferred that his house be left alone.

The suddenness of the appearance of Tam and Chacham in his city caught the merchant, along with his wide-open mansion, off guard. Left with no choice, he reluctantly surrendered his house so that it could serve as the base where people could come to see Tam and Chacham to recieve advice blessings or to offer charity.

A few days later, the Tam and Chacham asked the merchant: “Tell us the truth, are you not happy with the fact that we are staying here?”

“Both of you are my honoured guests. In fact you bring blessings to my home” replied the merchant earnestly. “I am thrilled to be hosting you and delighted that you chose to stay at my house. The problem I have does not lie with you but rather with the all those people who want to speak to you. You see, when you come, they come. And when they come, along comes the mud, dust and muck from the streets. The very thought of all that grime on my clean floors and furniture just horrifies me. “It was never because of you, G‑d forbid. The idea of the mud has always been off-putting to me.”

Tam and Chacham thought for a moment and them Tam began to speak:

“There once lived a doctor who was very very wealthy and an active sinner. He managed to transgress almost all of the Torah’s prohibitions. After a long life of pleasure, the doctor was greeted in heaven by the horde of prosecuting angels that he managed to create throughout his lifetime of sins. Their loud, emphatic accusations and protests challenged the heavens to find a sliver of virtue for his poor soul.

“Suddenly, an angel appeared before the heavenly court and began to tell an account of kindness that transpired in the doctor’s youth: It once happened that a man’s wagon, overloaded with merchandise, keeled over in the road. The horse was pinned to the ground and the wagon driver, unable to raise the upended wagon by himself, stood by helplessly as he waited for aid that did not seem to come. However, continued the angel, the young doctor happened to be traveling down the same road. And when the wagon driver’s misfortune met his eyes, the doctor stopped to assist the grateful man. Only after the two successfully managed to turn the overloaded cart so that it was upright on its wheels, did the doctor continue on his journey.

“Immediately after the angel concluded his story, a horse and wagon overloaded with merchandise were placed on the empty pan dangling from the Heavenly scales of justice, which had been tilted heavily on the side of sins. Helped by the new weight, the balance shifted towards the center. But the lifetime of sins still outweighed the single good deed.

Charity tzedakah

“We demand that the mud and soil be added to the scale as well,’ chorused the good angels. ‘After all, he had to extract the wagon from the muck, didn’t he?’ But the prosecuting angels vehemently insisted that the doctor had nothing to do with the mud, which had no direct relevance to him. The heavenly court therefore decided to send the doctor’s soul back to this world to determine whether mud holds any significance for his soul. If so, mud would be placed on the heavenly scale on the side of merits. But if not …”

Tam paused his story and fixed his gaze on the merchant.

“You possess the soul of that doctor, and your evil inclination is working overtime not to allow that mud into your house. “

Upon hearing these words from Tam, the merchant ran to the door and began pleading to the people waiting outside. “Come in, come in,” he cried. “Come as you are and greet our honored guests.”

He Who Shames Another Has No Portion in the World to Come

Tam and Chacham taught many students and frequently they were asked about how people treated one another. Once students were discussing a prayer that says, “Open our eyes to Your Torah, help our hearts to cleave to Your commandments. Unite all our thoughts to love and revere You. Then shall we never be brought to shame (v’lo nayvosh l’olam va’ed)” (Siddur).

One student shared that the TaNaCh asked, “Have we not all one father? Has not one G-d created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother…?)” (Malachi 2:10) He continued, “Why must many find ways to shame others in public? Aren’t we taught that ‘He who shames his fellow man in public… has no portion in the world-to-come.’ (Pirke Avos 3:15)”

Another student responded, “We learn ‘let the honour of your fellow-man be as dear to you as your own, and do not be easy to anger’ (Pirke Avos 2:15). If we treated everyone with respect and honour so they would not be shamed, less people would be angered by shame and embarrassment. If one would remember and consider ‘Who is honoured? He that honours his fellow men’ (Pirke Avos 4:1) the world would be a much better place.’ “

Chacham listened to the students as they searched for meaning and understanding about the honour and respect to be shown to everyone. After some time, he raised his hand and the room became quiet as the students eagerly waited for him to speak.

Many knew that he and Tam had very different views on matters concerning public behavior and the treatment of one another. He began by describing Tam’s respect for every individual as being unequaled. Tam did not discriminate between people, but honoured everyone equally, regardless of a person’s background or beliefs. Never did Tam say a disrespectful word.

Chacham recounted that he was once walking in the forest with Tam when a man with a severe speech impediment approached them to ask for directions to a doctor’s house that could treat him and possibly improve or cure his speech problems. Feeling uneasy about leaving Tam alone on the road, he directed the man to the doctor’s house by pointing out the way.

Language

Tam asked Chacham if they could walk with the man all the way to the doctor’s house. Chacham asked why Tam felt it important to escort the man to his destination. Tam explained that he did not want the man to have to ask someone else for directions lest he be too embarrassed to reveal his speech Impediment to yet another person.

“Why is this so important? Asked Chacham, “The Torah (Scriptures) says ‘I (Moses) am not eloquent…but am slow of speech and tongue.’ (Exodus 4:10) it was not an issue to the Holy One, blessed be He.”

Tam answered, “Moses was not ashamed because he was speaking to G-d. He approached us because he saw two men dressed as rabbis and felt secure that we would not mock him. I wanted to save his having to ask again and thereby spare him any unnecessary embarrassment.”

Chacham turned to the students and reminded them of the prayer:

“May it be Your will, O Eternal our G-d and G-d of our ancestors, that no hatred against any person come into our hearts, and no hatred against us come into the hearts of any other person, and may none be jealous of us, and may we not be jealous of any; and may Your law be our labor all the days of our lives, and may our words be as supplications before You.” (Talmud Yerushalmi, Berachos 4.2)

May it be the will of the Holy One, blessed be He that you should not embarrass others and not be embarrassed yourself? (Moed Katan 9b)

Chanukah

Charity and Support From Near

Tam watched one of his students sitting around the table learning. Both Tam and Chacham knew the student well enough to realize that something was terribly wrong. The student always seemed to be cheerful and enthusiastic, but now seemed to be carrying a weight on his shoulders that was too heavy for him to bear.

Tam and Chacham noticed that the student continued to come on time to learn. He continued to ask his probing questions and to come up with deep, penetrating answers. The learning must calm him and lighten his burdens.

The rabbis observed that the gloominess would cloak their student as soon as he closed his holy text to go back home. It was then that his wonder and excitement seemed to leave him.

The rabbis were afraid to mention anything because he didn’t want the student to think their questions were intrusive. After all, maybe this was just a passing thing. So for the time being, Tam and Chacham decided to keep their concerns to themselves.

As the classes continued, however, the heaviness surrounding the student seemed to overwhelm him completely, and Tam and Chacham could no longer keep their concerns to themselves.

One day as class came to end, Tam and Chacham invited the student to sit with them and with great concern spoke to the student. Chacham began, “You are a fine student and one day you will be a teacher and leader in the community. Please tell us what’s bothering you. We can’t bear to watch you go on like this any longer.

The student looked at his teachers and then dropped his eyes to the table in front of him for a few long moments until he finally gathered his thoughts.

“You know how much I love learning and how my greatest desire is to be fully involved in Torah for the rest of my life,” began the student, baring his heart. “Well, the small stipend I receive just doesn’t meet my growing expenses, even though my wife is working long, hard hours. After careful consideration, my wife and I have come to the difficult conclusion that this season will be my last one learning full-time. As you can tell, I’m heartbroken.” At those words, the student burst into uncontrollable sobs, and the rabbis stood up and hugged the student tightly in the middle of the beis midrash (house of learning).

Tam and Chacham had no words to comfort the broken student. What could they possibly tell him? About the loss it was to the entire class? About the loss it was to the world at large? That would just make him feel even worse.

After a meek attempt to reassure the student, Tam and Chacham silently left the beis medrash, deep in thought. That night, the rabbis felt so sorry for their student who wanted nothing more than to sit and learn but whose dreams and aspirations would be dashed due to finances. Why does everything in this world have to revolve around money? They thought in frustration.

Tam and Chacham thought for a long time about their student. They saw their student every day, but he was unable to study or concentrate on the lessons as he had in the past. The rabbis wondered if there was a way to help their student.

A week later, Tam came into the beis medrash, in high spirits. “You’ll never believe this!” he said loudly as soon as his eyes met his student. When he realized that many people in the beis medrash could hear him, he lowered his voice to a whisper.

Torah and Scales

“Last night, I was speaking to an old student of mine who lives far away.  Explained Tam, “and he mentioned to me that he was interested in forming a Yissachar-Zevulun partnership (The relationship between the tribes of Yissachar and Zevulun whereby Zevulun deals in business and Yissachar in study of the Torah/Scriptures and holy writings.)

with someone. He has a large sum of money he’d like to invest in this arrangement and he wants to find a serious student to support so that he can share in the reward of his learning.

“I told him all about you,” continued Tam, “and he was very excited for you to be his Yissachar. What do you say? Is this something you’d be interested in?”

“I can’t believe it!” the student lightened up. “This is the best news I could possibly hope for! Of course I’d love to do that! How can I thank you for putting this together?”

“By sitting down and learning to the best of your ability,” answered Tam with a mysterious twinkle in his eye.

“Do you mind if I go out for a minute to call my wife to tell her the good news?” asked the happy student.

“Do we not learn, ‘enjoy life with the life you love’? (Ecclesiastes/Koheles 9:9) By all means share your good news with her,” agreed Tam.

The arrangement worked out beautifully, with Tam serving as the middleman. On the first of each month, Tam would present his student with a sizable sum of money, and the student was very appreciative.

One month, the student approached his teacher Tam, “I know that my benefactor wishes to remain anonymous. Still, it would mean so much to me to be able to express my appreciation to him. Do you think it would be appropriate for me to write him a letter?”

“It would be very appropriate,” encouraged Tam.

A couple of days later the student’s letter was finished, he put it in envelope, and handed it to Tam.

“Please address the envelope and send it out as soon as you can,” urged the student. “I want it to get to my benefactor as quickly as possible.”

Tam took the letter from his student and left the beis medrash. Instead of depositing the letter in the mailbox, however, he inserted it into his own pocket and went to share it with Chacham — because that’s where it truly belonged.

The Patriarchs – Admire or Aspire

Tam and Chacham were in the forest where they were learning together. A young man sat down by a tree and listened to them hoping to ask them a question.  Everyday the young man would pray, but did not understand the  beginning of the Shemonah Esrei:

My L-rd, open my lips, and my mouth shall declare Your praise.

Blessed. are You L-rd our G-d:

Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d and G-d of our fathers, G-d of Abraham, G-d of Isaac and G-d of Jacob, the great, mighty and awesome G-d, exalted G-d, who bestows bountiful kindness, who creates all things, who remembers the piety of the Patriarchs, and who, in love, brings a redeemer to their children’s children, for the sake of His Name.

O King, (You are) a helper, a savior and a shield. Blessed are You L-rd, Shield of Abraham.

The young man approached them and asked, “I see that you are indeed wise and know all manor of knowledge can you explain why we begin the ShemonahEsrei do we speak of the forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?”

Chacham  invited the young man to come closer and then explained:

“The reason we use the Forefathers as the basis for the first blessing in given in Genesis 12:2. When the Holy One, blessed be He said to Abraham (then still called Abram), “I will make you a great nation, I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.”

We learn that  “Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish said with regard to G-d’s blessing of Avraham: says that “I will make you a great nation” corresponds to the phrase “G-d of Abraham,” “I will bless you” corresponds to “G-d of Isaac,” and “I will make your name great” corresponds to “and G-d of Jacob.” One might think that all three of the Forefathers should be mentioned in the blessing’s conclusion, therefore the Torah says, “and you (that is, Abraham) will be a blessing.” For this reason, the blessing concludes “shield of Abraham,” naming him alone.” (Pesachim 117b)

The young man looked confused, so Tam asked him to take a deep breath and not get discouraged and gently began:

“We mention the Patriarchs at the beginning of the Shemoneh Esrai not only to praise their merits but also to challenge ourselves to try to be like them.

 You see there once was a holy rabbi learning with his students in the study hall just before the time for afternoon prayers. Suddenly a stranger appeared. From the way he was dressed, it was obvious that he was a very wealthy merchant. After sitting down, he asked one of the students to point out their teacher, the holy rabbi. When the student did so, the merchant’s face suddenly went pale.

After the prayers were over, the man approached the holy rabbi and greeted him. The holy rabbi politely returned the greeting, assuming the man was a stranger. The merchant became very sad and looked straight into the holy rabbi’s eyes and asked him “Don’t you recognize me? I am your chavrusa (study partner) from thirty years ago.”

The holy rabbi looked at him closely and said, “Of course I do. And I am eternally grateful to you, because you are the one who helped me develop my potential in learning.”

After they chatted for a while, the merchant said, “I feel devastated. Look at you, you are now a holy rabbi, respected by all and held in high esteem as a talmid chacham – a great scholar. Yet we both know that when we were students, I was the one who helped you and explained the finer points of the lessons in the school we attended. How can you ex­plain why you developed so much in learning, while I just fell behind?”

The holy rabbi thought for a few moments and replied, “Do you remember that when we were students, there was a reading room next to the study hall? In that reading room was a biography of the MaHaRal of Prague.  When you read that biography, I remember how impressed you were. You came out of the reading room with your eyes shining and declared, `He was so far ahead of his time and a brilliant rabbi!’ When I finished reading that biography, however, I said to myself that the life of this man was proof of the great heights a person can reach. I decided right then and there that I, too, would aspire to emulate him and try to become a illuy (Jewish scholar of extraordinary ability). This strong drive helped me to realize my potential and develop beyond my greatest expectations. That is the difference between us. I was not satisfied to simply acknowledge that he was an illuy, but I wanted to become one myself.”

Similarly, when we come to the point in our prayers when we mention the merits of our Patriarchs, it is not enough to simply acknowledge their greatness. We must also take upon ourselves the challenge and try to emulate them. For this reason we say, “When will my deeds reach the level of the Avos?” Even though we may not ever reach their level, we can consider it a great accomplishment to at least try to follow in their footsteps.

The young man smiled and thanked Tam and Chacham and followed a new path out of the forest and in his everyday prayer and studies.

The Cantonist’s Prayer

The Jewish citizens of Russia were thrust into a state of anxiety in the Fall of 1827 when Tsar Nickolas I signed the “Statute on Conscription Duty”. Tsar Nickolas I was planning to issue many laws intending to make everyone Russian. The laws included a ban on chadarim (Jewish elementary schools). The Jewish community immediately took action by sending a delegation of prominent rabbanim to Petersberg, which included Tam and Chacham.

Everyone hoped to return home to be with their families in time for Yom Kippur, but it was not to be. The meetings seemed to take forever lasting day after day. Tam and Chacham sadly realized that they would be forced to spend the holiest day of the year in the capital city of Russia.

In their search to find a place where they could daven (pray) on Yom Kippur, the Tam and Chacham learned about a group of Cantonists who would be conducting a secret Yom Kippur service and decided to join them.

Cantonists were Jewish soldiers who had been abducted from their homes and drafted into the Russian army at a very young age. The Cantonist soldiers knew very little about Torah and Jewish beliefs and ways of living, relying only on the distant memories from their few short years at home. When they would finally be released from army service at the age of forty-three, many of them would find that their parents had already died, leaving them no where to go or call home. The passage of time had dulled their memory of the Yiddish language, and many would no longer be able to communicate with their any of their relatives.

This group of Cantonists, whose service Tam and Chacham had joined on that memorable Yom Kippur, clung to their Jewish traditions and identity in the face of severe torture. In spite of all the suffering that they continued to bear because of their religion, these Jewish soldiers felt isolated from the Jewish community and completely alone in the world.

Tam and Chacham participated in the outpouring of emotion as they davened the prayers of Yom Kippur in the Cantonist service. Ma’ariv was followed the next day by Shacharis, Mussaf, and Minchah. Finally, it was time for Ne’ilah, the most important prayer of the year. In many communities, it is customary for the most prominent member of the minyan to lead this sacred prayer.

Shortly before Ne’ilah was scheduled to begin, a Cantonist, who was the spokesman for the group, approached Tam and Chacham saying, “Although you are certainly worthy of leading the tefillos, we would like to ask permission for one of our fellow Cantonists to lead the Ne’ilah service in your stead.” Then he turned to the Cantonist who was to serve as chazzan (leader of Jewish prayer) and asked show his back. The man’s back and muscular arms were covered with terrible wounds and gashes.

“Do you see this?” asked the spokesman. “They are whip-marks. As a young boy he resisted. Every morning he was placed on a bench and given at least 100 strokes of a birch, leaving him bleeding and reeling in agony. After each birching, he was sent to the infirmary where he was treated and then soon beaten again. He absorbed the abuse, did not cry out, and did not relent. You must understand that during our friend’s entire time in the army, he never once ate non-kosher food or desecrated the Shabbos. As a result, he sustained many beatings, but he never gave in. Therefore, we request that he be the one to daven Ne’ilah, since we consider him to be our worthy representative.”

Tam and Chacham were totally astounded at the tremendous self-sacrifice of the seemingly simple man standing before them, and of course, they agreed.

The Cantonist chazan began leading the tefillah and chanted ashrei, followed by uva l’Tzion. When it came time for Kaddish, he paused. Walking up to the Aron Kodesh, he began to speak in a powerful voice, baring his heart as a child speaks to his father:

“Ribbono shel Olam, Master of the Universe It is now the holiest time of the year. What do Jewish people throughout the world ask for at this time?” Answering his own question, he continued, “They ask for three crucial things:

Yom Kippur Ne'ila

Banai – Children Chayei – life

and M’zonei – sustenance.

we Cantonists don’t need to bother You to ask for these things.

Banai – Children: we’ll never have. When we will finally be released from army service, there will be no one to marry us! No Jewish woman will agree to marry us because we know little to nothing of Your Torah. Of course, we can’t marry non-Jewish women either. We know that we will never get married and so unfortunately, we will never be blessed with children.”

With tears filling his eyes, the Cantonist continued,

Chayei – life: what kind of life is this to live, so estranged from the rest of the Jewish People? We don’t desire a long life.

M’zonei – sustenance: sustenance: we don’t need to ask You for food. As soldiers in the Russian army, the tzar supports us and provides us with our needs. So what do we ask for at this auspicious time?”

As tears streamed down his cheeks, the Cantonist cried out:

“There is only one thing that we ask for!” Then, in the traditional tune that is recognized in shuls throughout the world, he called out, “Yisgadal v’yiskadash sh’mei raba – We ask that the Name of Hashem be sanctified and that His name be recognized throughout the world.”

With tears freely flowing, he continued to recite the rest of the Kaddish.

After Yom Kippur, Tam and Chacham learned from that the Cantonist’s moving words what a person should truly pray for. Instead of focusing only on one’s own personal needs, we should pray that the Name of the Holy One blessed be He should be sanctified and that we should constantly bring about a kiddush HaShem in the world.

Trust and Faith

Throughout the Torah and our studies, we learn that Hashem does not have to prove anything to us. Every day as we say the Shema, “Hear O Israel. The L-rd our G-d is One”, we firmly believe in all that the Torah teaches and need no other proof that it is true. However, we continue by saying, “to your name give honor.” To those who would challenge you, please answer them, in order that Your great Name be glorified by all. Even though we don’t need proof of Hashem’s greatness, the nonbelievers do, and we trust that He will reveal Himself to them — in His own time and way.

Tam and Chacham used to travel to faraway places to encourage people to bind themselves to Torah and mitzvos. During such journey, they stayed with an observant Jewish innkeeper and noticed that something was troubling the man and asked him about it.

The distraught innkeeper explained: “Yesterday a man came into the inn and ordered a drink. He then reached into his bag and took out some food and put it on the table. To my amazement, I saw that it was a piece of pork! Then he turned to me and said  ‘It says in the Torah that one is forbidden to eat pork. Well, if there is a G-d, let him make me choke on this pork that I’m now going to eat.’ With that he swallowed the pork, and nothing at all happened to him! This incident has shaken my faith and has caused me to have doubts”

As soon as he finished speaking, the innkeeper’s son burst through the door and proudly announced that he had received his degree with honors in his major, music, and that he was qualified to enter a higher institution or even apply for a position in the symphony orchestra.

After his father told him how proud he was. Tam and Chacham wished him a hearty mazel tov and wished him much success. Chacham asked the young musician if he could test him. The young man proudly responded, “Yes by all means!” Chacham asked the young man to play Avinu Malkeinu so he could offer his opinion of the young man’s ability. The proud musician was highly offended at this request, and stormed out of the room. The father was embarrassed by his son’s disrespectful behavior, and ran after him to make him come back and apologize to Tam and Chacham. The young man apologized but then tried to explain why he had been so angry. “The degree I just received is proof of my proficiency. There should be no further need of tests to prove my ability. And so I felt hurt and angry that you wanted to test me with such a simple song – A song known and played by every child.”

“Absolutely,” agreed Chacham to everyone’s surprise. “I simply wanted to make a point, to stress how absurd it is for someone to try to test G-d. His Torah is the only ‘degree’ we need, and for this reason there is no need for further tests.”

We say to Hashem You do not have to prove anything to us. We firmly believe in everything Your Torah teaches. It is taught, “reason has long since decided that the Holy One, blessed be He needs nothing, but all things need Him,” (Emunos v’Deos 3:10  933 ce)

Remember the Past – Hope for the Future

A very educated young man was walking down a path when he met Tam and Chacham. The young man heard them talking about the sad time leading up to Tisha b’Av. Everything he learned from his school and society made him see religious observance as old, outdated and silly. He decided to strike up a discussion and asked. “You are recognized as leaders and teachers of the Jewish community, so explain to me what is the use of all of this mourning and sadness between Shiva Asar b’Tammuz and Tisha B’Av? Couldn’t we do just as well without it?”

Chacham answered, “By remembering all the terrible things that happened during those three weeks throughout our long history, we hope for a better future.”

The young man countered, “what so terrible happened?”

Chacham continued, “During the three weeks:

Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses our Teacher) broke the tablets on which Hashem had written the Aseres haDibros (Ten Commandment) when he saw the Jewish people worshiping the Golden Calf.

During the Babylonian siege of Jerusalem, the Jewish people were forced to stop offering the daily sacrifices due to the lack of sheep.

Apostomos the evil Roman general burned the holy Torah in public

An idol was placed in the Holy Temple during the time of Antiochus, and.

The walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Babylonians and later by the Romans.

Tish b'Av

Tisha b’Av is a very sad day in Jewish history, for on this day:

The spies returned from the Promised Land with frightening reports, and the children of Israel had second thoughts about entering the land. G‑d decreed that they would therefore wander in the desert for 40 years. (Numbers 13-14)

Both Holy Temples in Jerusalem were destroyed on this date. The First Temple was burned by the Babylonians in 423 BCE and the Second Temple fell to the Romans in 70 CE unleashing a period of sorrow and suffering which is felt by the Jewish people to this very day.

The Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans in 135 CE ended in defeat: The Jews of Beitar were butchered on the 9th of Av and the Temple Mount was plowed one year later on the same date.

Later on in our history, many more tragedies happened on this day, including the beginning of the Crusades 1n 1095, the expulsion of the Jewish people from England in 1290 and the expulsion of all Jewish people from Spain.”

The young man laughed, “All that’s ancient history, today the world is much more enlightened and such things can never happen. All this sadness has led to a cultural depression among the Jewish people. Come on, let’s look at today and tomorrow and not live in yesterday.”

Chacham just starred at the young man in disbelief and then responded,

“On Pesach (Passover) we remember the wicked son who asks, ‘what is this service of yours?!  He says of yours—implying that it is not for him. By excluding himself from the community…’ “

Tam seeing that Chacham was getting upset and a grin of satisfaction was spreading across the face of the young man began, “Let me try to answer your question in another way.

Once there was a fire that destroyed many homes. Some of the homeless people search the ruins to find things that may have escaped destruction. Others don’t bother looking! Those who look are the ones who expect to rebuild their homes. The others have probably given up and don’t even want to make the effort,

“Our mourning is the same way. We remind ourselves of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh (the Holy Temple) because we haven’t given up. We are looking forward to the coming of Moshiach (the Messiah).”

Tzedakah and Teshuvah – Charity and Forgiveness

The routine of everyday living can leave us with little time for thinking of others. Sometimes, however, a single moment’s thought can be acted upon and cause one to reach great heights.

Tam and Chacham often traveled together to a certain village to collect money for many causes. Many Jewish families in the village became wealthy from the lumber business. They hoped that they would be able to convince the prosperous Jewish leaders of the village to contribute generously to their charity causes. Somehow, though, the people of the village were all extremely reluctant to give tzedakah (charity). Still, year after year, Tam and Chacham made the effort to return to the village and try to collect a little bit more than the year before.

Tam and Chacham would spend several days making their usual rounds of wealthy Jewish businessmen. Each person gave willingly enough, but it was only a small amount in comparison to the sums that Tam and Chacham knew these men could afford.

After a week of collecting in the village, Tam and Chacham noticed a certain name on their list: Feival Fenster. Feival Fenster was a very wealthy man and was always too busy to talk to Tam and Chacham. In all the years that Tam and Chacham had been coming to the village, they had never actually been able to make contact with the wealthy merchant. There was little reason to think that things would be different this time, but Tam and Chacham tried to meet with Feival Fenster once again.

Much to their surprise Feival Fenster answered the door himself and welcomed them into his home. He extended his hand to Tam and Chacham and gave them a heartfelt “Shalom Aleichem” (Peace be unto you). They responded, “Aleichem Shalom (unto you peace). Feival asked, “What can I do for you?”

Tam and Chacham explained that they were collecting tzadakah (charity). Much to their surprise, the wealthy merchant answered with an almost regretfully, “You know I really owe you an apology. I know you’ve been trying to reach me for years, and it just never works out. What if you meet me at the inn tomorrow morning? We could have a good, long talk, and take things from there.”

Tam and Chacham could hardly believe that the wealthy merchant was actually going to meet with them.

The next morning found Tam and Chacham walking to the inn well before ten o’clock. Finally, a few minutes after the appointed hour, Feival Fenster came up to them. “Shalom Aleichem” (Peace be unto you). I am so glad to meet with you. Let’s sit down and talk.”

The two men sat down with the wealthy merchant. Tam and Chacham described the yeshivah and kiruv (outreach) projects they were collecting for to Fenster. They further emphasized the importance of Torah (Scripture/religious) education and the great responsibility of contributing to its support. Feival Fenster listened closely, asking important questions from time to time. The minutes stretched out to an hour, then longer. Finally, Chacham gathered enough courage to ask Feival Fenster a question he had been wondering about for a long, long time.

“Reb Fenster,” he said hesitantly. “You are a very prosperous merchant and you deal with many, many people. If anyone understands this village, it would be you. You are aware that we have been coming to this village for several years. We also do some fund-raising in other neighboring villages, I was wondering why the people of the other villages are so much more charitable than the people in this village?”

Feival Fenster froze. Watching him, Chacham wished there was some way he could withdraw the question. Antagonizing or insulting the wealthy merchant would certainly not be the best way to convince him to make a donation.

“Rabbi,” he finally whispered in a soft child-like voice. “Rabbi, I’m so ashamed. I’m ashamed of myself and my village.” He swallowed. “What will I say to the Holy One, blessed be He when I stand before the Heavenly Court?” His heart broke as he buried his face in his hands and cried.

Tam and Chacham, astonished beyond belief, sat quietly and waited. Feivel’s words had sounded almost like a Yom Kippur confession. The wealthy merchant was completely broken and looking for selichah (forgiveness).

After several moments, Feival partially composed himself. In a trembling voice, he said, “Rabbis, whatever amount of money you ask, I’ll give you. I, I want to redeem my community from this embarrassment…” Tears overflowed his eyes as he broke down once more.

Tam softly suggested a figure. Suddenly, Feivel Fenster stood up and ran out of the inn. Tam and Chacham did not know what to expect, they felt that maybe they had embarrassed and overwhelmed the wealthy merchant.

Some time later, Feivel Fenster returned with a large bag and gave it to Tam. As Tam accepted the bag of gold coins, he felt a great sense of awe for this simple Jewish man who had willingly shouldered the shame of his community and opened his heart to the mitzvah of tzedakah (Charity).

Repentance, Prayer and Charity will cancel the harsh decree
