The Doctor No One Liked Cures King’s Son

The lack of faith caused by science is not old. It is such an age-old matter that “Asa in the thirty-ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet until his disease was severe; yet in his disease, he did not seek the L-rd, but sought help from physicians. (2 Chronicles 16:12) He did not put his faith in the Holy One, blessed be He. This disease would lead to his death just two years later (2 Chronicles 16:13)

In a time when doctors guide people in their cures and treatment of the body, the needs of the soul are often forgotten. The doctor’s esteem and pride grow in the eyes of the people. If a patient dies, he merely collects his fee and goes on to the next patient. “Both the doctor and the Angel of Death kill, but the former charges a fee.” (Sefer haMevakesh, 1264 ce) Just as disease ravages the body, lack of faith devastates the soul. Many time spiritual teachers and leaders are overlooked as unscientific and backward.

Once there was a king whose son became deathly ill. The court physician could not find any way to heal him, nor could the other experts who were called in. The king became so desperate that he sent royal messengers to proclaim throughout the land that anyone who could help should come to the palace at once. It didn’t matter to the king whether one was a doctor, a magician, or a sorcerer. The main thing was that the prince be cured.

Usually no one was allowed into the private chambers of the palace, but the king instructed the guards to let any expert into the prince’s room to examine him, if only it might help him get better.

One doctor in the capital was very wise, but he was not at all popular because of his spiritual approach to the treatment of his patients. He did things differently than the other doctors, so they thought him odd and at times backwards. People admitted that he knew a great deal, but they were wary his strange ways and stayed away from him.

When the prince first became ill, this doctor had not gone to the palace to help. He was quite sure that he could cure the boy with a common herb that grew along every riverbank. The many doctors who had come from near and far would argue with him and not seriously consider his treatment of the prince. He asked himself why should he go argue with the medical authorities if they would refuse to listen to him?

The prince’s condition worsened, and the situation had changed. The king had opened the doors of the palace to every knowledgeable doctor in the kingdom. Now there was a way to examine the prince without everyone arguing with him.

So the doctor said a prayer to the Heavenly Healer and went in to examine the prince in person. He saw that he had indeed been right about the cure. Eager to save the prince, he went to speak to the king.

When he got to the throne room, he found the king was surrounded by doctors and professors from many lands. Some of them had even brought whole cases of rare medicines with them.

The king might have been willing to listen to him, but the other doctors would surely make fun of his diagnosis and the common, everyday medicine he wanted to prescribe. He had to think of some way to make the others agree with him and recommend his treatment to the king.

What did he do?

First he asked permission to speak to the king and all the physicians in the room. Then he told them what he thought the problem was. Finally, he explained which medicine would cure the prince’s illness. He further explained to the king that the herb had to be prepared by a great expert who could grind it up just the right way. The king must search for a gifted pharmacist who was skilled at preparing rare, exotic medications. Only then could he be sure that the prince would be cured.

The doctor did not fail to mention that such an expert would deserve a generous reward for his work.

As the physicians stood listening, each thought to himself, “Surely the king will ask me to do the job since I have such a fine reputation. Therefore, I must urge the king to accept this fellow’s advice.”

And so it was that everyone suddenly agreed with the strange doctor, even though they did not like him his odd ways and spiritual approaches. They all encouraged the king to give the suggested cure a try, thinking of the hefty reward they would earn for preparing the herb.

But much to their disappointment, to prepare the medicine the king chose none other than the strange doctor himself.

“You must be the greatest expert of all!” the king declared. “Of all the doctors I have consulted, only you proposed this cure. No one can compare to you. So you yourself will be the one to prepare the herb.”

The doctor knew that his skill and treatment was not the source of the cure, but he was just a messenger of the Holy One, blessed be He. To this doctor and those like him was attributed, “Honour physicians for their services, for the L-rd created them; (Ben Sira 38:1)

Sadly today so many put their faith in science and technology that they do not recognize or even forget that any treatment or cure must help the body as well as the soul. “He who sins against his Maker will be defiant towards the physician. (Ben Sira 38:15)

Healing Food and Blessings

In earlier generations, there were great rabbis who could heal the sick. if a person ate food in his house, they went away with a blessing of healing.

The wife of one of these holy rabbis died, and he wept terribly and would not be consoled or comforted. The holy rabbi told his closest students, “You might have thought that people who ate in my house were healed because of me. That is not true. It was because of my holy wife. Now that she has gone to the World of Truth, I can tell you. Listen carefully, and I will tell you about how the food my wife prepared had the power of healing.

“In our earlier days, we were very poor. If we ate one or two meals during the week, no matter what, we always had to eat on Shabbos (the Sabbath). Sometimes we fasted from Shabbos to Shabbos. Then we had enough food for ourselves and for some guests. One week, my holy wife was cooking on Erev Shabbos (Friday) when a drunkard knocked on the door and was invited in.

He was smelling of alcohol, but he said to my wife, ‘I’m starving. Do you have anything to eat?’ We hadn’t eaten that whole week, but who knows how long he had been without food? And when someone says he’s starving, how can you not feed him? So my wife gave him from the food she had prepared for Shabbos. But after finishing what she gave him, he asked, ‘Is there more?’ Each time, he ate whatever was put before him and asked for more, until she said, ‘There’s not a crumb left.’

She gave him everything she had prepared for our Shabbos meals. Everything she gave him to eat and drink was done with great respect and care. She did not judge him by how he looked or for his crude behavior, for who knows what troubles he had had? She did this mitzvah (religious deed) “with all her heart and all her soul and with all her might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)

‘Then this drunkard did something unusual. He asked, “Can I speak with your husband?’ My wife came to my room and told me about his strange request, and when I agreed, she sent him to me. When he came in, he no longer smelled, and he didn’t appear drunk. In fact, his face was glowing, and I realized at once that this was Eliyahu haNovi (Elijah the Prophet).

“He said to me, ‘I only came here to bless your wife. Her kindness has made a great impression in heaven. But we wanted to give her a final test to see if she was worthy of the great blessing, we have in store for her. She passed the test.’

“What was the great blessing? It was the blessing of healing. And that,” said the holy rabbi, “was why the food my holy wife served healed whoever ate it.”

Food that is prepared and served with love can heal the sick and revive the weary. The food offered by the holy rabbi’s wife with such self-sacrifice contained such a heavenly blessing.

Traditional Jewish Chicken Soup

Chicken Soup also called the Jewish penicillin is a powerful remedy that cures all disorders physical and spiritual. Several spoonfuls of Goldene yoich (golden chicken soup) warm the body and the neshama – soul.

INGREDIENTS

2-3 tablespoons olive oil		½ teaspoon dried sage
1-2 carrots, cut in 2-3 inch pieces		1 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1-2 onions, chopped		1/4 cup loosely packed fresh parsley, with stems,
3 stalks celery with leaves cut in 2 inch slices		2 teaspoon kosher salt + more, to taste
3-4 garlic cloves, smashed		1/2 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
1-2 bay leaves		3-4 pound chicken, whole or parts cut-up

INSTRCTIONS

Heat oil in a large Dutch oven or medium saucepan over medium high heat. Once oil is hot, add garlic, onion, carrots and celery; cook for two to three minutes, or until onion becomes translucent.

Add spices (turmeric, thyme, sage, salt and pepper) stir until vegetables are well coated.

Fill the pot with 1 to 1 ½ gallons of water and add bay leaves and parsley. Bring to a boil and let boil 1 hour.

Add chicken and partially cover the pot and bring the water to a low boil. To the extent that foam develops on the soup, take it off the top with a spoon and discard it.

Adjust the heat if necessary to keep the soup at a simmer and continue simmering, with the pot partially covered, for 2-3 hours. The soup will develop a golden color and a rich savory taste.

Check the seasoning and add more salt and pepper to taste if necessary. At this point, you can refrigerate or freeze the soup, or serve it.

Can be served with noodles, knaidlach (matzo balls), rice, mandlen (soup nuts and kreplach.

Recipe Notes

If you want your soup to be low fat, refrigerate it for several hours or overnight at this point to separate the chicken fat. The fat will rise and solidify. You can skim it off to discard or freeze for later use. Chicken fat or schmaltz is a delicious savory alternative to other fats or oil.

A Woman’s Faith and her Crying Baby

The righteous live by their faith. (Habakkuk 2:4)

A child was born to a certain family, and the baby cried morning and evening – not like other infants but terrible constant screeching. The family took the baby to doctors, to specialists only to be told that they could not find the cause of the nonstop crying and screaming. The parents then went to many rabbis who were skilled in spiritual and mystically potent remedies – but that too did not help. They actually became very discouraged as their son would not eat, drink, or sleep, he was always screeching and crying. It was not long before the sadness of the parents wore heavily upon them.

One day, the mother went to the market and found a page of holy writing on the street. Being a religious woman, although uneducated and illiterate, she bent over, picked it up, and thought to herself, “Perhaps the Holy One, blessed be He, will send a healing to my baby through this holy page.”

When she got home, she carefully cleaned off the page, which was covered with dirt, dried it and tenderly folded it. She then gently placed it under the baby’s pillow, with the silent prayer, “Ribbon shel olam – Master of the Universe, I don’t know how to read or write, but I know that this is a page of the holy Torah. May this page bring a holy cure for my son that he heal quickly from his suffering.”

That very night, for the first time in the baby slept soundly and peacefully without any disturbance, without any screeching or crying, so that it amazed everyone. He was quiet for a whole week.

One day, the child’s father asked his wife if she knew what had caused this miracle. She went over to the baby’s crib and took out from under the pillow the folded page of the Torah, which she showed to her husband and said, “Is there any cure in the world better than the words of Hashem? See how great the power of the holy Torah is!”

The husband, who could read and write, looked at the page and turned pale. He began to scream, “What have you done? Do you know what this page is? It’s from the Torah portion Tochachah (the Rebuke, a section of the Torah full of fearsome curses against evildoers Deuteronomy 28:15–69).

Healing and Comforting Words

It was the practice of Tam and Chacham to walk together in the late afternoon. One day they were approached by a sick man during their walk. The sick man asked the two holy rabbis what he should do to be cured.

Chacham advised the sick man to pray to Av haRachaman (Father of Mercy) for a recovery from his pain and sickness as it is written: “Heal me, O L-rd, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for you are my praise. “ (Jeremiah 17:14)

The sick man looked at Chacham and quietly explained, I cannot pray very well and my voice is but a very small voice becxause of my pain and sickness.

Tam saw the pain of the sick man and comforted him by reminding him that the Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses Our Teacher) taught us in the Torah (Scriptures), “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19) Tam continued, “Be strong and of good courage; have no fear . . . for the Eternal One, your G-d, is the One who goes with you, never failing you or forsaking you. (Deuteronomy 31:5) and always remember that the words of the Holy One, blessed be He ‘I see your journey, and I bring healing. I will guide you and bring solace to you. Says the Eternal G-d: I will heal you!’ ” (Isaiah 57:18-19)

Tam and Chacham spoke for a long time with the sick man when a farmer, who had been listening said to them, said, “You’re interfering in something that’s none of your business! G-d afflicted him with illness and you want to heal him?”

Chacham answered, “Don’t you as a farmer do the same?” Tam added, “The Master of the Universe created the earth, but you have to plow, till, fertilize and cultivate it if you want the land to produce a harvest. ‘As for man, his days are as grass’ (Psalms 103:15). The human body is the tree, the medicine is the fertilizer and the physician is the tiller of the earth. Besides ‘The L-rd created medicines out of the earth, and the sensible man will not despise them.’ “ (ben Sira/ Sirach 38:4)

A Search in Judaism: The Right Medicine

Often people become so dependent upon the many “modern” amenities and look upon belief as old and outdated. Without hope there is no faith and without faith there is no “cure” for everyday problems.

When one believes in the greatness of the holy one, blessed be He, life is filled with wonder and beauty. Faith is the key. Faith binds a person to tradition. A tradition that satisfies the soul, and allows one an inner peace.

True faith is based upon person experience and therefore requires neither proof nor demonstration. Everyday the wonders of creation surrounds us. Each instant many miracles occur.

Yet many still inquire into the ways of the world, trying to fathom that which is cloaked in mystery, wonder and amazement. The only way to understand is through faith, a belief that is pure and unshakeable.

Today, people, in their pride has reduced the spiritual world into that of philosophy and science.

What is life? One may ask. They will not accept that it is a gift of the Divine. Instead they talk of chemicals, DNA and electrical forces. Man can not create life.

True faith is deep within one’s inner self and once found will allow one to see the world on many levels. It will also allow one to live and be at peace with themselves and all around them.

The Right Medicine

This is a story about a Jewish merchant who lived in a small town somewhere in Bylorussia of old. He had always enjoyed good health, but one day he suddenly fell sick. He did not know what was wrong with him and even with the different remedies he took, he became worse from day to day. He saw a doctor, who prescribed a certain medicine, but that did not help him either: Finally, he decided to see the greatest doctor in town, who was known as the Specialist, he was known the greatest doctor in the whole region.

The Specialist gave the patient a very thorough examination, asked him many questions, and then told him he was sorry he could not help him. “Only G-d can help you,” he said gravely.

The poor Jewish merchant was very upset with the doctor’s advice.

Then he remembered hearing that in the nearby small town, there was a holy rabbi who had helped many people. So he set off to visit the holy rabbi, hoping that he could help.

Arriving at the rabbi’s house he found many other Jewish people waiting to see him. Luckily (perhaps because he looked so worried), he was admitted to see the rabbi almost immediately.

When he came into the presence of the holy rabbi, he could not hold back his tears, and poured out his heart describing his desperate condition, begging the rabbi to help him for the sake of his wife and children.

The rabbi replied: “A doctor’s job is to heal, and not to make his patient feel worse. Actually your condition is not at all serious; it is just a kind of fever and will pass.”

Astonished, the Jewish merchant asked, “But rabbi, holy rabbi if it is a fever, shouldn’t I be shivering?”

“So you will shiver,” answered the rabbi, reassuringly.

The Jewish merchant could hardly believe what he had heard and was, of course, overjoyed.

No sooner had he left the holy rabbi than he felt cold, and began to shiver slightly. And, as he continued on his way home, the shivering increased. As soon as he got home, he went straight to bed, feeling hot and cold all over, and shivering without a stop.

“As a matter of fact, when the rabbi told me I had a fever, I asked him, ‘if I have a fever, would I not be shivering:’, to which he replied, ‘So you will shiver.’ And sure enough, no sooner did I leave the holy rabbi’s presence than I began to shiver, and the shivering steadily increased and became violent. I got into bed and shivered hot and cold for several days. Then, with G-d’s help, I recovered completely from my illness.”

“`With G-d’s help’ you said. Wasn’t that what I also told you, `I cannot help you, only G-d can help you !”‘ the Specialist exclaimed happily.

All smiles, the Specialist and the Jewish merchant shook hands, wishing each other good health.

Added the Specialist: “Some day I hope to see this holy rabbi, but not in a professional capacity. No doubt he can do more for me than I for him.”

Adjust the heat if necessary to keep the soup at a simmer and continue simmering, with the pot partially covered, for 2-3 hours. The soup will develop a golden color and a rich savory taste.

Check the seasoning and add more salt and pepper to taste if necessary. At this point, you can refrigerate or freeze the soup, or serve it.

Can be served with noodles, knaidlach (matzo balls), rice, mandlen (soup nuts and kreplach.

Recipe Notes

If you want your soup to be low fat, refrigerate it for several hours or overnight at this point to separate the chicken fat. The fat will rise and solidify. You can skim it off to discard or freeze for later use. Chicken fat or schmaltz is a delicious savory alternative to other fats or oil.

The righteous live by their faith. (Habakkuk 2:4)

That very night, for the first time in the baby slept soundly and peacefully without any dis­turbance, without any screeching or crying, so that it amazed everyone. He was quiet for a whole week.

The husband, who could read and write, looked at the page and turned pale. He began to scream, “What have you done? Do you know what this page is? It’s from the Torah portion Tochachah (the Rebuke, a section of the Torah full of fearsome curses against evildoers Deuteronomy 28:15–69).

Look what it says here: ‘G-d will smite you with madness . . . you shall be terrified night and day. . . . In the morning you will say, “Oh that it were night!” And at night you will say, “Oh that it were morning!”’”

The distraught father looked at his wife (who was about to cry) and slowly smiled and told her:

Faith is the summit of the Torah (Mibhar haPeninim # 123 c.1050). How great is the power of faith that turns the harsh judgment of Heaven to mercy and turns curses into blessings!”

It was the practice of Tam and Chacham to walk together in the late afternoon. One day they were approached by a sick man during their walk. The sick man asked the two holy rabbis what he should do to be cured.

Chacham advised the sick man to pray to Av haRachaman (Father of Mercy) for a recovery from his pain and sickness as it is written: “Heal me, O L-rd, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved; for you are my praise. “ (Jeremiah 17:14)

The sick man looked at Chacham and quietly explained, I cannot pray very well and my voice is but a very small voice becxause of my pain and sickness.

Tam and Chacham spoke for a long time with the sick man when a farmer, who had been listening said to them, said, “You’re interfering in something that’s none of your business! G-d afflicted him with illness and you want to heal him?”

Often people become so dependent upon the many “modern” amenities and look upon belief as old and outdated. Without hope there is no faith and without faith there is no “cure” for everyday problems.

When one believes in the greatness of the holy one, blessed be He, life is filled with wonder and beauty. Faith is the key. Faith binds a person to tradition. A tradition that satisfies the soul, and allows one an inner peace.

True faith is based upon person experience and therefore requires neither proof nor demonstration. Everyday the wonders of creation surrounds us. Each instant many miracles occur.

Yet many still inquire into the ways of the world, trying to fathom that which is cloaked in mystery, wonder and amazement. The only way to understand is through faith, a belief that is pure and unshakeable.

Today, people, in their pride has reduced the spiritual world into that of philosophy and science.
