Rabbi Beroka and Eliyahu haNovi – Elijah the Prophet

Rabbi Beroka Choza’a was often found in the market of Bei Lefet, and Eliyahu haNovi (Elijah the Prophet) would often appear to him. Once Rabbi Beroka asked Elijah, “Of all the people who come here, is there anyone in this market worthy of the World-to-Come?” Eliyahu haNovi answered him, “No.” In the meantime, Rabbi Beroka saw a man who was wearing black shoes, very different to the Jewish custom, and who did not place the sky-blue, dyed thread of ritual fringes on his garment. Elijah said to Rabbi Beroka, “That man is worthy of the World-to-Come.”

Rabbi Beroka ran after the man and said to him, “What is your occupation?” The man answered him, “Go away now, as I have no time, but come back tomorrow and we will talk.” The next day, Rabbi Beroka arrived and again asked the man, “What is your occupation?” The man responded, “I am a prison guard, and it is my practice to imprison the men separately and the women separately. At night I set my bed between the men and the women, and I guard them all night long, so that they will not come to transgression. When a Jewish woman is imprisoned with me, I try to keep watch over her and to save her. On one occasion a Jewish woman was brought to prison who was married. I saw that some of the prisoners thought to act improperly with her. So, I took a measure of yeast and dregs of red wine and threw them on the lower part of her dress and told her, ‘Daughter, tell any man who approaches you that it is your time.’ She did so and she was saved, for no man approached her.”

Rabbi Beroka said to him, “What is the reason that you do not have threads of ritual fringes, and why do you wear black shoes? The man said to him: Since I come and go among the people of power, I dress this way so that they will not know that I am Jewish. When they issue an evil decree, I inform the Sages and community leaders, and they pray for mercy to annul the evil decree.” Rabbi Beroka further asked, “And what is the reason that when I said to you: What is your occupation, you said to me, ‘Go away now but come tomorrow?’” The man replied, “At that moment, they had just issued an evil decree, and I said to myself: First I must go and inform the Sages and community leaders, so that they will pray for mercy over this matter.

Religious Values

In the meantime, two brothers came to the marketplace. Eliyahu haNovi noted to Rabbi Beroka, “These two also have a share in the World-to-Come.” Rabbi Beroka went over to the men and asked them, “What is your occupation?” They answered, “We are jesters, and we cheer up the sad and depressed. Alternatively, when we see two people who have a quarrel between them, we try to make peace.” It is said that for this behavior one enjoys the rewards of his actions in this world, and yet his reward is not diminished in the World-to-Come.

The Righteous Are Delivered from Distress

There was once a pious man who was wealthy and of the king’s company. He had a handsome, fine-looking, and wise son. Before he passed away, he told his son not to leave the synagogue from the moment the cantor rose to pray and began to recite the Kaddish prayer until the whole service was over. Also, if somebody who had not been present were to rise and recite the evening prayer he should stay there until he had finished as well. The dying man added: “I have done this all my life and I have prospered. And if you pass through a city where there is a synagogue and you hear the cantor, enter and do not leave until he has finished his prayers.” Then the pious man passed away.

Now the son was well thought of by all who saw him. He served the king and was the wine bearer to the king and queen and sliced them their bread and meat. They loved him very much and praised him to the skies. The king’s vizier saw the favor in which the king and queen held the young man and envied him. He came to the king and said: “Your majesty, you have eyes yet you do not see that this young man loves the queen, and they betray you behind your back when they are together.” The king did not believe him, yet the vizier repeated it day after day until the king grew jealous.

Proverbs 11:8

One day the king went to inspect the workers who were preparing a limekiln, and he said to the master of the workers: “Take the first man who comes here tomorrow and fling him into the kiln at once. If you do not do so, you will pay for it with your own life.” “Your majesty,” answered he, “I shall obey your orders.” Then the king returned home. That night while the young man was serving him, he called him and ordered: “Rise early tomorrow morning and go where they are preparing the lime and tell the man in charge to make a great fire.” “I shall carry out your orders,” answered the young man.

In the morning he mounted his horse, but as he passed the synagogue he heard the cantor’s voice. He dismounted, entered the synagogue, and prayed. When the cantor had finished, another man who had not heard the prayers rose and began to pray, and he waited until he finished as well. And so he was delayed until it was broad daylight. Meanwhile, the king summoned his vizier and ordered him: “Go to the place where they are making the lime and ask the man in charge: Have you obeyed the king?” Then the vizier mounted his horse and rode off and asked the man in charge: “Have you obeyed the king’s orders?” Thereupon they seized him and tied him up and flung him into the kiln. The young man arrived just then and saw them flinging the vizier into the kiln, and he said to them: “If the king knows this, he will slay you.” But the man in charge answered: “Yesterday the king ordered me: ‘Take the first man I send to you tomorrow, and fling him into the kiln.’ And this is the man who came first.”

Then the young man returned to the king and said: “Your majesty, why did you order the vizier to be burned?” At this, the king shuddered and shook with astonishment and said to the youth: “Now I know that you are G-d-fearing, and your Creator loves you. This is what the vizier said about you and the queen. So I ordered that the man whom I first sent to the limekiln should be flung into the fire; and it was you I first ordered to go. After that I told the vizier to go and see whether my orders had been obeyed. But you were delayed, so they flung him in instead. Now I know that you are innocent.” That is as the Book of Proverbs declares (11:8): “The righteous is delivered from distress, and the wicked comes in his stead.”

What is More Valuable a Mezuzah or a Diamond?

Ardavan, the king of Persia, believed that the fulfilment of one’s life was to be as rich and wealthy as possible. The leader of the Jewish people during the reign of Ardavan was Rabbi Yehuda haNasi, or as most people called him, Rebbe. Rebbe was an extremely wealthy man. Therefore, when Ardavan became the owner of a diamond that was so perfect it surpassed evaluation, he sent it to Rebbe. He also sent along a message saying, “Send me something that is as valuable as this.”

Ardavan felt that he had attained total fulfillment by owning this stone and wanted to see if Rebbe could outdo him.

Rebbe understood the underlying meaning of Ardavan’s message; therefore, he wrote a mezuzah and sent it to Ardavan. (The mezuzah is a piece of parchment with specific paragraphs of the Torah [Deut. 6,4-9, 11, 13-21] written on it. The Torah commands us to place it on the doorpost of each room in which a person lives.) Rebbe’s intention was to convey to Ardavan the idea that the fulfillment of man was not through earthly wealth but could only be achieved through spiritual media. The mezuzah, with which we observe a commandment of the Torah, is one way to reach a high level. To study the Torah itself is an even higher level of spiritual greatness. Spiritual experience, not physical expe­rience, is the only true fulfillment of man on this earth.

Rebbe then replied, “The Torah explains the value and greatness of even a small commandment.” He went on to explain that spiritual development is greater than physical fulfillment.

Rabi Yehudah replied: “All of your desirable things are not compared unto her (the mezuzah, symbolizing the knowledge of G-d). Moreover, you sent me something that I must guard, whereas I sent you something that guards you while you are asleep, and while you are awake, as it says ‘When you walk, it shall lead you (in this World); When you lie down, it shall watch over you (in the hour of death); and when you awake, it shall talk with you”’ (in the World to Come) (Proverbs 6:22; Midrash Rabbah 35).

Ardavan was still skeptical about all this when suddenly a demon came flying into the room and settled itself in the body of Ardavan’s only daughter. Ardavan was very dis­turbed about the welfare of his only child and called in all the medical and spiritual doctors of his kingdom. But nothing helped. Ardavan saw that his daughter’s condition was deteriorating rapidly and so he decided to give one last try. He took the mezuzah Rebbe had written for him and put it up on the doorpost of the sick child’s room. The demon immediately left her weakened body.

Ardavan realized the wisdom of the mezuzah in the teaching, “When you walk, it will lead you; when you lie down, it will watch over you; and when you awake, it will talk with you.” (Proverbs 6:22)

With the gratitude and blessings of King Ardavan Rebbe then kept the beautiful and expensive diamond.

Justice, Love and Mercy

Justice, and only justice, you shall pursue. (Deuteronomy 16:20)

Justice is not necessarily the law, but the spirit of what is right and wrong, but let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream. (Amos 5:24) Justice evolves and changes as it is applied with faith, values, and passion. True justice is tempered with mercy and love.

Centuries ago, it was known far and wide that a certain leader was the greatest of all the tribes. When power was measured by superior physical strength, the most powerful tribe was the one that had the strongest leader who defined justice for the people.

This tribal leader was especially known for his wisdom. To help his people live safely and peacefully, he carefully established laws and a system of justice guiding every aspect of tribal life. The leader enforced those laws strictly and, long ago, acquired a reputation for uncompromising justice.

In spite of the laws, there were problems. One day it came to the leader’s attention that someone in the tribe was stealing. He called the people together.
“You know that the laws are for your protection, to help you live safely and in peace,” he reminded them, his eyes heavy with sadness because of his love for them. This stealing must stop. We all have what we need. The penalty for the person caught stealing has been increased from ten to twenty lashes from the whip.

Then again, the thief continued to take things that didn’t belong to him, so the leader called all the people together again.

“Please hear me,” he pled with them. “This must stop. It hurts us all and makes us feel bad about each other. The penalty has been increased to thirty lashes.

Still, the stealing continued. The leader gathered the people together once more.

“Please, I’m begging you. For your sake, this has to stop. The pain it is causing among us is too great. The penalty has been increased to forty lashes from the whip.” The people knew of their leader’s great love for them, but only those closest to him saw the single tear make its way slowly down his face as he dismissed the gathering.

Finally, a man came to say the thief had been caught. The word had spread. Everyone had gathered to see who it was, and the thief was dragged through the crowd.

A single gasp raced through the crowd as the thief emerged between two guards. The tribal leader’s face fell in shock and grief. The thief was his very own mother, old and frail.Justice

What will he do? the people wondered aloud, a hushed murmur fanning out. Would he uphold the law or would his love for his mother win over it? The people waited, talking quietly collectively holding their breath.

Finally their leader spoke. “My beloved people.” His voice broke. In little more than a whisper he continued, “It is for our safety and our peace. There must be forty lashes; the pain this crime has caused is too great.” With his nod, the guards led his mother forward. One gently removed her robe to expose a bony and crooked back. The appointed man stepped forward and began to unwind the whip.

At the same moment, the leader stepped forward and removed his robe as well, exposing his broad shoulders, seasoned and solid. Tenderly, he wrapped his arms around his dear mother, shielding her with his own body.

He whispered gently against her cheek as his tears blended with hers. He nodded once more, and the whip came down again and again.

A single moment, yet in that moment, love and justice found an eternal harmony.

Kugel and Shabbos Lights

The times were hard, and food was scarce. Each day, a poor widow worked so hard in the hopes of buying food for her children. Each day, she would set aside a small portion of food to be used for Shabbos. One week, sadly, she was only able to save a few potatoes, some eggs, a piece or two of bread, an onion, and some oil.  

The winter winds blew, and the snow fell, and sickness knocked at the door. The children of the widow became sick, and every day, their bodies weakened. Her oldest son got up from his sick bed and asked his mother, “Last week, you made such a wonderful kugel for Shabbos. Could you please make it again for this coming Shabbos?…. Please?”  

What the child did not understand was that the ingredients for the kugel had been gathered together by his mother throughout the week. His mother would many times give up her daily portion of food to set aside a bit just to honor the Sabbath day. The widow questioned herself, could she make the sacrifice again? How could she not, when her efforts would bring such joy to her children as well as to the Shabbos Queen.

 Shabbos Kallah

She carefully grated the potatoes and mixed them with breadcrumbs that she saved throughout the week. She added eggs, salt, pepper, and a small onion and was ready to pour the kugel into the pan to bake in the oven, and a thought entered her mind.  

She had some oil saved, and that little bit of oil would greatly improve the quality and taste of the kugel. How delighted her six children would be! It would bring nourishment to their weakened bodies and delight to their hearts.  

But how could she? She had been saving the precious oil to kindle the holy Shabbos lights. She knew the importance of Jewish law and tradition placed in the lighting of the Shabbos candles. She also knew that the moments after kindling the holy Sabbath lights were the most opportune for a mother to pray on behalf of her children. What better way to help her children than by praying for them as she kindled the Shabbos licht (lights)?  

Inside her beat, the heart of a loving mother, and her instincts would not permit her to place the kugel in the oven without the oil. She was torn as to what to do. After some time, she had an idea.  

The oil was added to the kugel…. As the sun began to set that Friday night, the widow stood before her Shabbos lights – fixed without oil. She closed her eyes, and gently welcomed the holy Shabbos (Sabbath Day) into her home:

Shabbos Candles

Ribbono shel olam, Master of the universe, please accept these candles without light. In your infinite mercy, illuminate them with your heavenly radiance. Forgive me for having taken the oil from the wicks in order to light the joy of Shabbos in the hearts of my six children. If I have sinned and you cannot accept this prayer, I beg of You who is compassionate and slow to anger, to listen to the Shabbos songs of the children that will resound in my poor house, when I bring this kugel to the table.

That night the children ate their kugel, which tasted of paradise. They burst into song, saying it’s “Shabbos Kodesh (the Holy Sabbath),” and Shabbos Queen responded in kind, “let us sing a song to the love and sacrifice of the Jewish mother.”

To Drink or Not To Drink

And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He rested from all His work which God in creating had made. (Gen. 2: 1-3)

Shabbos, the holy Sabbath Day, is a time of rest. A time to refrain from all types of work. It has been celebrated by the Jewish people for thousands of years as a day to enrich the spirit and to strengthen faith.

Shabbos Story

Once there was a man who was so thirsty that he thought he would die, but he did not wish to ask anyone to bring him water on the holy Sabbath Day since all forms of work are prohibited. When others saw him suffering they brought him water. He did not wish to drink or benefit from their forbidden labors, and he asked: “Who asks you to profane the holy Sabbath Day on my behalf?”

A wise man responded to him: “Remember the teaching, ‘For the blood of your lives I will require. (Genesis 9:5)’ Don’t ever forget that one should “choose life, so that you and your children may live” (Deut 30:19)

The man countered, “We are taught that ‘the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath’  (Exod. 31:16). All forms of work are forbidden on the holy Sabbath Day is learned from ‘while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks of wood upon the Sabbath day . . . and they stoned him with stones, and he died.’ ” (Num. 15:32 and 15:36).

The wise man thought for a moment or two and responded, “Great is the holy Sabbath Day for it is never put off unless there is a danger to human life. (Beitzah 22a) Read and learn the holy words ‘He shall live by them’ (Lev. 18:5)–he shall not die because of them. (B. Yoma 85a) To save a life, disregard a Shabbos, that the endangered may observe many Shabboses.  (Mekilta, Shemos 31:1).’ “ The wise man turned to the others and said, “to him that is thirsty, bring water.” (Isa. 21:14)

The man began to protest when the wise man continued, “Fur­thermore, if you do not drink, it means that they have profaned the Sabbath unnecessarily.”
