Creation of the Perfect Woman

Posted on Monday, 20, April, 2009Wednesday, 3, October, 2018 by Rabbi

This week we read in parshah Bereishis (Genesis) about the creation of woman as it is written:

G-d cast a deep trance upon the man, and he slept. He took one of his ribs, and closed the flesh in its place… G-d built the rib that He taken from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (Gen. 2:22)

Everything is influenced by the source from which it was created.  The Holy One, blessed be He arranged things so the woman was not created from any place that would have an adverse influence because He wanted her to be perfect.

Jewish Woman

He said:

“If I create her from the head, she will be lightheaded and frivolous.

If I create her from the eyes, she will be overly curious. She will sit by the window, with her eyes wide open so as not to miss anything.

If I create her from the ears, she will always be listening to gossip, causing much strife when she spreads news about others’ affairs.

If I create her from the mouth, she will be talkative and a gossip.

If I create her from the heart, she will be jealous.

If I create her from the hands, she will constantly handle things and be a meddler.

If I create her from the feet, she will be wanderer and promiscuous”

G-d wanted woman to be as perfect as possible, and not to have any undesirable traits. He therefore created her from a place which could not have any adverse affect on her personality. He wanted her to be intrinsically free of all adverse traits.

The rabbi has tried to add at least one or two new stories each week, with the hope of strengthening faith and understanding through the many readers and communities.  Due to rising expenses and the need to work longer hours and harder, his stories have become less frequent.

What was originally started as a way to share old and forgotten tales of faith costing almost nothing and representing a few hours a week of time commitment evolved into a project demanding a lot of time and expense.  The highest cost is the time cost – working on this site many hours a week. This is all very good, and we’re delighted at the steady growth in popularity of the Story Tour Blog, but please don’t let us become victims of our own ‘success’!

No income from the Story Tour Blog has been realized, but expenses have grown such as web-hosting, software and other web-based development costs. Our goal is to raise $5000.00 which would allow us to improve the Story Tour Blog.  If you feel you’ve received some value, or would like to help support the site’s ongoing presence, please share.  Any donation would be much appreciated and will help to keep the site online and growing.

A Question for Passover Ayecha – Where Are You?

Posted on Tuesday, 24, March, 2009Tuesday, 27, March, 2018 by Rabbi

Passover is coming fast. It is a time of questions and sometimes we need to look to ourselves for answers. The reading of the hagaddah during the Passover seder raises many questions on so many levels that many become very self aware.

What is the first question in the Bible?

Before man was created, there were no questions. The first question occurs in the Garden of Eden. The man and Eve ate of the forbidden fruit. G-d calls out to them, “Ayecha?” “Where are you?”

 Passover, Where Are You

How can that be? Does G-d not know where the man and Eve are? For centuries, the Jewish people have recognized that this question has a deeper meaning. G-d is not seeking to find the man and Eve. That is why they do not answer, “We are over here!” Instead, it is a question of spiritual geography. The man, understanding the importance of G-d’s question, answers that he was frightened, so he has been hiding.

That question is not only the first question; it is also the eternal question. At each moment in our lives, this question is addressed to us: Where are you? Where are you spiritually? Where are you morally? What have you done with your life, and what are you doing with it now? Are you proud of your conduct in the garden?

The first question is a single word, whose echoes are endless. “Ayecha?” – Where are you?

Life has a Plain Wrapper

Posted on Thursday, 19, March, 2009Tuesday, 19, January, 2021 by Rabbi

So often one looks at the outer trappings of world and misses the deeper meaning of life. The physical beauty of  the world often clouds the perception of what is good and wholesome. Major signs of change in T’NaCh (Bible) where often plain unassuming things:

  • burning bush to communicate to Moses

  • Mt. Sinai is a small low mountain

  • shepherd that become leaders (Abraham, Issac, Jacob, Joseph, David, Solomon, etc)

Lastly, full-body checkups is another must-so in see these guys now viagra pill the list. A concept I learned about cooking and preparing meals in the kitchen, is that dishes are made better when more different ingredients are used. levitra pill You have been suggested to take the medicine once in a day even prior planned lovemaking activity Always buy Kamagra medicine through a registered online pharmaceutical store Avoid taking alcohol the day you are planning for the intercourse Check the expiry date before use. sildenafil free shipping It order viagra http://www.devensec.com/meetings/Record_of_Decision_final_9-5-19.pdf is also common to feel little cramps and pain during sex.

So often one must try to understand the most basic, unattractive, plain things contain the meanings of the important aspects of their lives.

Simple Faith

Once upon a time the daughter of the Emperor asked Rabbi Yoshua ben Chananiah, “Is it not very strange that there is so much Torah (scriptural learning) in you and you are so terribly ugly? So much wisdom in such a disgusting vessel!”

“Let me ask, where do you keep your wine? In what kind of vessels?” Rabbi Yoshua inquired.  The daughter of the Emperor answered, “We keep our wine in simple earthenware vessels, because for many years past wine has always been kept in earthen vessels.”

Rabbi Yoshua suggested, “You are very wealthy people, you ought to keep your wine in vessels of silver only, the ordinary people keep it in earthen jars.” So she went and told the Emperor, who poured all the wine into silver jars. Within a short time the wine turned sour, and they reported to the Emperor that all his wine had turned into vinegar. Then the Emperor asked his daughter, “Who advised you to pour the wine into silver jars?” The princess replied, “Rabbi Yoshua ben Chananiah.” So the Emperor sent for Rabbi Yoshua and asked him, “Why did you give such advice to my daughter so that all my wine has turned to vinegar?” Rabbi Yoshua replied, “As she spoke to me so I spoke to her. She said to me, what a pity such great learning is in such a contemptible vessel. So I said to her, ‘Why do you keep wine in a cheap vessel?’ I also said that as the Torah does not stay with a man of handsome appearance, so wine does not keep in a silver vessel.” The Emperor said, “But there are many good looking men who possess learning.” Then Rabbi Yoshua replied, “If they were not so handsome they would be more learned still, for a man of handsome appearance is not a man of modesty, and therefore he forgets the Torah which he has learned.”

Torah the Best Merchandise

Posted on Wednesday, 11, March, 2009Thursday, 15, February, 2018 by Rabbi

Once upon a time a ship carrying merchants and all their goods sailed over the sea, and among the passengers was a teacher. The merchants began to talk about the wares which they carried with them, and what they intended to buy. Finally they asked the teacher what merchandise he had, and he answered: “I carry all my goods with me.” The merchants searched the whole ship for his wares, for they thought that he had precious stones, but they could find nothing. So they laughed at him and said that he had no merchandise at all. The teacher replied:

“Why are you laughing at me? The goods which I carry are of greater value than any which you have in the ship’s hold.”

Merchant ship

As they continued traveling on the high seas, they were attacked by pirates, who robbed them of all the merchandise which they had in the ship. When they landed, they found themselves quite poor and had nothing to eat or drink or any clothes to put on. The teacher, however, went into the town and entered the bet hamidrash (House of Study). When the people heard him speak wonders of Scriptures, they at once brought him clothes and gave him a large amount of money. The good people of the town also followed him out of the city.

When the merchants saw the great honor which was shown to the Jewish teacher, they begged his pardon for having laughed at him, and asked him to request the townspeople to give them something to eat so that they might not die of hunger, for he had seen that they had been robbed of their property.  And the teacher replied:

“Did I not tell you that my merchandise was more valuable than yours? For you have lost your property, but mine is still with me. Furthermore, one who buys and sells does not always gain, sometimes he gains and sometimes he loses, and even when he gains he is not sure that the profit will remain with him, but the Torah remains forever, in this world and in the next. I was right, therefore, about the goods which I had with me.”

Once Upon A Time…Tales That Touch The Spirit

Posted on Sunday, 8, February, 2009Sunday, 12, August, 2018 by Rabbi

Someone asked: “With so many stories why do you mainly tell religious ones?” I have told ancient, medieval, American folktales and Jewish stories in the past, but it seemed that the religious stories were being lost. So many other storytellers tell the vast gamut of secular stories, and every Jewish storyteller tells the Chasidic tales. I chose to tell the biblical, midrashic and medieval Jewish stories so that they will inspire and touch the heart and soul of the listener.

Stories have touched the hearts, minds and souls of people since the beginning of time. For this reason they have been used continuously for millennia. Too many people stop with Bible stories and have forgotten the art and skill of spiritual storytelling. A holy man once said, “I came to teach you scriptures and you understood it not, therefore I will tell you stories.” Spiritual storytelling always has an underlying purpose, which is to inspire people with faith and communicate wisdom and values.

Storytelling has always been a main way for communicating spirituality. Some of the greatest religious teachers were expert storytellers. Then, as time passed, events in their own lives also became stories. In Judaism, some communities emphasize the importance of sacred storytelling and the sacred story.

Storyteller

What is the difference between religion and mysticism? It is the difference between believing in G-d and actually experiencing the Divine Presence. The stories touch the listener and awakens the yearning for more. They help people to see the wonders around them and allows them to peek into the mysteries of life.

Mysticism is a path to the deepest meaning of life, to the source of joy, and to a closer relationship with G-d. Yet, even non-mystics can tap into these wellsprings of mystic teachings in their search in today’s confusing world.

So, I, in the Jewish tradition of the maggid (storytelling rabbis) will continue to tell the stories others don’t and have been forgotten.

The Innkeeper’s Reward

Posted on Tuesday, 20, January, 2009Friday, 21, July, 2023 by Rabbi

So many people become lost in their search to serve the holy One, blessed be He. The service in and of itself is fairly uncomplicated. Simply put, “Serve Him with a whole heart and with a willing  mind.”  (I Chronicles 28:9)

The Innkeeper’s Reward

An officer traveled at the head of a large caravan in order to perform an important task that the king had assigned him. The sun set in the middle of their trip, and spotting an inn alongside the road, they headed directly towards it.

The innkeeper was delighted to merit the honor to host the king’s officer. He therefore tried his utmost to make his esteemed guests’ stay a pleasant one. In their honor, he arranged a table replete with various delicacies, and when they had eaten their fill, he prepared comfortable beds that would provide them with a good night’s sleep.

Upon rising in the morning, the officer asked the innkeeper how much he owed him for their stay, and the innkeeper requested a substantial sum of money.

The officer paid the full amount and thanked the innkeeper. He then took his place at the head of the caravan and continued his journey, quickly forgetting all about the inn and the innkeeper.

Several days later, he arrived at another inn, and this time as well, was showered with exceptional hospitality as the innkeeper went well beyond the call of duty. Wanting to please his guests, the innkeeper served them delicious food and beverages, and provided them with comfortable sleeping arrangements as well.

The next day, the officer approached the innkeeper and requested to pay for his stay. The innkeeper, however, would not hear of it.

“Absolutely not!” he said to the officer. “It is both a pleasure and an honor that a great individual such as yourself would choose to lodge at my inn! The honor you have accorded me will be my full compensation!”

Upon hearing the innkeeper’s heartfelt words, the officer was filled with tremendous affection for the simple man. He therefore commanded one of his servants to go and bring a particularly heavy chest from one of the wagons. Opening the chest, he removed magnificent jewelry and gems and presented them to the innkeeper.

1Chronicles 28:9

“Here you go, my dear sir,” said the officer. “This is a small portion of the reward that you shall receive for the loyalty that you have shown me. In addition, if you ever need anything from the king, do not hesitate to turn to me!”

The officer went on his way but never forgot the innkeeper and his kindliness.

There are two types of people who serve Hashem (G-d).

There are those who serve Hashem (G-d) in the hope of receiving a reward. Hashem certainly looks upon his Divine service favorably, but in the end he only receives his due reward.

But there are others who serve Hashem (G-d) merely for the joy of serving King of All Kings. His reward is many times greater and brings Hashem much enjoyment.

This is what we are taught in Pirke Avos (Ethics of the Fathers) 1:3: “Be not as servants who serve the master for the sake of receiving [even a token) of reward, but rather, be like servants who serve the master not for the sake of receiving a reward”

Torah through Time

Posted on Tuesday, 6, January, 2009Thursday, 8, February, 2018 by Rabbi

There was a time when little changed: People grew up in the same place as their parents, knew the same people their whole lives, did the same work, ate the same food, and heard the same languages as their parents and grandparents. Today we are constantly moving around, meeting new people, hearing new philosophies and ideas, and meeting challenges caused by the changing world around us.

New ideas and new philosophies have flooded our ancient faith. In this confusing time, is there a bottom line?

Torah Tree of Life

Once upon a time a Roman came to the School of Rabbi Shammai and said to him, “I should like to become Jewish, can you will teach me the whole of the Law while I am standing on one leg?” When he heard this, Rabbi Shammai took a measuring rod used by builders and drove him away with it.

The Roman left the School of Rabbi Shammai and went to the School of Rabbi Hillel, and asked him whether he would accept him into the Jewish community, and whether he would teach him the whole Torah while he was standing on one leg. Rabbi Hillel accepted him and said, “Yes, I will teach you the whole Torah while you are standing on one leg.”

Then he said to the Roman, “Keep this commandment, ‘Do not do to your neighbor what you would not like to have done to yourself.’ This is the basic principle of the law. All the rest is a commentary upon it. Now go and study it.” In this way Hillel taught him the whole Torah while he was standing on one leg.

Shabbos 31a

We are all bound by the our relationships: to G-d, to other human beings, and to all that G-d has created. All those relationships are touched by the changes in the world. But in each generation, the ancient and blessed conversation-the dialogue that is Judaism-continues.

A person who is facing a lot of problem in their life which is related to physical, mental and emotional problems. free sample viagra In the Growing Pains of Adrian Mole, his mother remarks “Why can’t your room resemble a tadalafil soft tabs teenager’s with knickers on the floor.
