Alexander and the Country of Women
The tale is told that Alexander the Great went to a country where there were only women and wished to make war with them. They said to him:
“Why do you wish to make war with us? If you defeat us, you will gain no honor and people will say that he killed women; while if we defeat you, everybody will say: Alas for that king who was defeated by women!”
“Please let me have some bread,” he asked them. So they brought him gold bread on a gold table. “Do the people here eat bread of gold?” the mighty Alexander asked. The queen answered: “Was there no bread in your city that you have to come and eat our bread?”
“I have come,” said he to her, “not because of your wealth but because of your laws.” “In that case, enter and come with us!” The queen invited and Alexander did so. While they were seated, a case was brought before them.
A man came forth and explained: “0 great and wise queen, I bought a piece of land from my neighbor and as was clearing the land to plant crops I found a great treasure. The treasure is not mine, I bought only the land and not any treasure that might be buried in it. My neighbor refuses to take back the treasure.”
Then a woman came before the queen and said: “Just as you are afraid of the punishment for taking something you do not own, so am I afraid of it. The fact is, I sold you the land and everything in it–from the depths of the earth to the heights of heaven.
“Have you a daughter?” the queen asked the man. “I have,” said he. Then she asked the woman: “Have you a son?” “Yes,” she answered. Then she told them: “Go and arrange for them to marry and in that way you will share the treasure between you and live together in peace.”
Alexander showed his amazement. The queen asked, “Why are you amazed? Have I not judged well?” Alexander: “Yes, well.” The queen asked, “If such a case had come up before you in your country, how would you have handled it?” Alexander replied, “In our country, the king would have put them both in jail and would have taken the treasure to use for raising a larger army for more conquests and the pleasures of the king.”
The queen thought for a moment and then asked: “Does the sun shine where you live?”
Alexander: “Yes.”
“Does rain come down upon you?”
Alexander: “Yes.”
The queen asked: “There are small cattle in your country, are there not?”
Alexander: “Yes.”
The queen responded: “May the breath of life in such a king be cut short! It is only for the sake of the small cattle that the sun still shines for such people and the rain still comes down upon your country.”

Creation of the Perfect Woman
This week we read in parshah Bereishis (Genesis) about the creation of woman as it is written:
G-d cast a deep trance upon the man, and he slept. He took one of his ribs, and closed the flesh in its place… G-d built the rib that He taken from the man into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (Gen. 2:22)
Everything is influenced by the source from which it was created. The Holy One, blessed be He arranged things so the woman was not created from any place that would have an adverse influence because He wanted her to be perfect.
He said:
“If I create her from the head, she will be lightheaded and frivolous.
If I create her from the eyes, she will be overly curious. She will sit by the window, with her eyes wide open so as not to miss anything.
If I create her from the ears, she will always be listening to gossip, causing much strife when she spreads news about others’ affairs.
If I create her from the mouth, she will be talkative and a gossip.
If I create her from the heart, she will be jealous.
If I create her from the hands, she will constantly handle things and be a meddler.
If I create her from the feet, she will be wanderer and promiscuous”
G-d wanted woman to be as perfect as possible, and not to have any undesirable traits. He therefore created her from a place which could not have any adverse affect on her personality. He wanted her to be intrinsically free of all adverse traits.
